What $10,000 Invested in Nvidia in 2015 Would Be Worth Today
Nvidia has been the single best-performing major stock of the last decade. Driven by gaming GPUs, data center AI chips, and the generative AI boom, the company went from a $20 billion market cap in 2015 to over $3 trillion today.
We ran the numbers. A $10,000 investment in Nvidia in January 2015 would be worth approximately $2.8 million today. That's a 28,000%+ total return, or roughly 65% annualized.
How it compares
The same $10,000 in the S&P 500 would be worth about $40,000. Still a solid return, but a fraction of what Nvidia delivered. Even other tech giants look modest by comparison:
- $10,000 in Apple since 2015: ~$95,000
- $10,000 in Amazon since 2015: ~$115,000
- $10,000 in Tesla since 2015: ~$870,000
Only Bitcoin over specific time windows comes close to matching Nvidia's returns.
The AI inflection point
Most of Nvidia's gains happened in two phases. The first was the crypto mining boom of 2017-2018, which drove GPU demand. The second, much larger wave came with ChatGPT and generative AI in 2023-2024, when Nvidia's data center revenue exploded.
Between January 2023 and the end of 2024, Nvidia stock rose roughly 800%. That two-year stretch alone turned $10,000 into $90,000.
The catch
Nvidia has also been wildly volatile. The stock dropped over 65% in 2022 before its AI-driven recovery. Holding through those drawdowns required conviction that most investors didn't have.
